Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category The 20th Century) for Friday, December 22, 2023 (Season 40, Game 75):

On July 19, 1940 Hitler called this man a warmonger & wrongly predicted he would flee to Canada

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Jason Carpenter, a stand-up comic from Santa Rosa Valley, California
Today's Final Jeopardy - Friday, December 22, 2023 (2)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

As we move onto our latest two-day total-point affair, today’s match features Juveria Zaheer, Jason Carpenter, and Iris Masucci. I think most people will think Juveria is the favorite, by virtue of her semifinal performance, but one thing that I definitely think that we’re going to start to see is that anything can happen in these matches, and we certainly may be in for unpredictable results! Remember that today’s scores are added to Monday’s in order to determine the overall champion!

Yes, Monday does see an episode just like normal. Make sure to check your local listings to see when the show is airing in your area on Monday! If it doesn’t, I’ll be publishing as normal; I’d love to see you stop by again on Monday evening!

Fun fact as well: today is Episode #9000 of the syndicated version of show. However, I do need to point out that this is only the 8,935th syndicated episode that has been taped. So, where’s the discrepancy? I’ve mentioned this a few times here on the site, but due to the situation in Los Angeles in the fall of 1984, between KCBS canceling the show after episode #25 in October and independent KCOP picking up the show in January 1985 for episode #86, 65 episodes (#26 through #85 and #191 through #195) were given duplicate episode numbers for summer reruns in 1985, episode numbers #196 through #260.

Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

In a United Press article from July 19, 1940, by Frederick C. Oechsner, Adolf Hitler offered “peace or destruction” to Britain. Referring to Churchill and the Allies as “warmongers”, [Editorial note: Sure.] Hitler also said, “What is coming will visit the people, not Churchill, who will probably be in Canada”. I would say Hitler certainly misread that situation, and I’m not sure how he did, considering Churchill had already made some of his most famous speeches just a few months prior in the British House of Commons (“Blood, toil, tears and sweat” in May, “We shall fight on the beaches” and “This was their finest hour” in June.) Only “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few” came after another unsuccessful German attack in August 1940.

Honestly, this probably will end up as a coin flip at worst between Winston Churchill and King George VI; I would hope that most people would lean in Churchill’s direction, but you never know!

Juveria 8 correct 1 incorrect
Iris 5 correct 1 incorrect
Jason 2 correct 0 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Iris couldn’t remember anything about her first appearance; it was just a blur to her.
Jason prepared by having the same breakfast, but somehow didn’t have it today.

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Bodies Of Water; Movie Inspirations; Contemporaries; New To The OED; Biology; Carols)

Within the first seven clues of the round, Juveria had found both Daily Doubles—and she converted them for a combined $20,000! This gave her a massive lead going into Final Jeopardy!

Iris 13 correct 1 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

Jason $10,600
Iris $6,400

Juveria and Jason both got Final correct; both went conservative on their bets. Juveria’s “effective lead” is $17,500 over Jason and $24,400 over Iris. It’s really big, but there are three Daily Doubles and Final Jeopardy, so it’s not insurmountable for them! We’ll find out who wins on Monday!

Tonight’s results:

Iris $6,400 – $4,000 = $2,400 (Who is Stalin?)
Jason $10,600 + $5,600 = $16,200 (Who is Winston Churchill???)
Juveria $45,600 + $5,600 = $51,200 (Who is Winston Churchill?)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • It’s abundantly clear that Juveria has been putting in some hard work in preparation, and it is absolutely paying off for her.
  • I don’t normally make comments about Final Jeopardy wagering on Day 1 of a final, but when you’re $35,000 behind, going all-in in Final Jeopardy has to be an absolute requirement. I’m quite disappointed that Jason didn’t take that chance.
