Nonato R Thrillers can be predictable and murder mysteries can be too complicated. Calibre is simple and gripping without any stars or superheroes. Just a plain thriller murder mystery that finishes really well. Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/08/24 Full Review Gabriel S Calibre is one of those movies that packs a strong emotional punch, leaving you thinking about it time and time again if you are one of those movie afficcionados, one of those that always dig deeper into a story, dismissing not any detail. The story is a paranoia rollercoaster painted in gray moral, one that could not end well, though it sure did overall.The movie builds itself slow, taking its time to set the vibe. After the incident, we are hooked into the movie’s ever-slow-increasing paranoia-driven momentum, bit by bit building tension to the point where you bite your nails.Adding to the tension, the beautiful and unsettling setting of a small village on the Scottish Highlands casts this folk-ish shadow arround our main characters, a village that surely hides its own secrets, where its inhabitans seem not welcome our main characters. The scenario contrasts with the overall anxiousness that surrounds the place, and Vaughm and Marcus’s every move, though calculated, seem watched.Naturally, plot points skyrocket to the the climax, and the finale fit the story. The ending scene is haunting and eerie, showing the marks that the story left on our protag.Protag Vaughn is an interesting character, but unfortunately the story explores little of his background with Marcus. We see hints of what seem to be not only a harsh past, but also dark, so it seems, as one character jokingly alludes to having sex with someone that was not awake.Another missed opportunity is the lack of exploration about the connection between protag Vaughn and Marcus, especially considering the climax and resolution. Nonetheless, this missed opportunity is a minor detractor; the story still pull it off.And maybe there could have been some more scenes building tension. We get a fair share, but I feel the story could throw some more curveballs, raising the paranoia to unsustainable levels.In the psychological thriller department, this movie gets the “good grade” rating, a do-watch piece for thriller lovers. It misses the perfect score by an inch, mostly for the lack of backstory and maybe a bit more tension building. Yet, overall, you are in for a thrill by watching Calibre. I was literally on the edge of my seat, holding my breath and heart racing the entire time. I'm really hit or miss when it comes to thriller/horror flicks, so feeling something grip me the way this one did is so refreshing. The acting, script, and setting were eerily immersive; there's no "fluff" that bogs down or throws off the pace/vibe of the movie. The plotline, ensconced in a brooding melancholia and layers of moral introspection leaves you fraught with anxiety like no other. I felt like I was there. I wish there were more movies like this.
